The summer of 1974 Murph decided to ride his bicycle, a
G. Lapierre, back to college across the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana.  His confidence came from having completed his second Wilkes-Barre 100, a 100 miles loop from downtown Wilkes-Barre, PA out to the small towns and mountaintops outside of town and returning downtown.  Due to the multiple elevation changes it was called "The Toughest 100 in the East."
