Whiteland Indiana

Later, while driving through Whiteland, IN I noticed some old service station signs, a LOT of them!

Alan Whitaker owns these
and spoke with me about
his collection

Mr. Whittaker calls his building with other
service station memorabilia, his "Toybox".

He's got that fancy star and been
collecting for only 4 years, so far!

His "Toybox" is about to get an addition.

Franklin Elmore Day

Just completed a 17 mile ride in my old high school town.  If I'd been in Crawfordsville today, we'd have declared "Elmore day!"  (Leave a comment on how you know "Elmore Day" or wish you knew.  🙂)

Franklin Past

How the house looks now, 48 years later.
While visiting in Indiana I decided to check out the area including the house we lived in from 1969 to 1972.

From the rear alley

I played basketball here, next door at the girls' club,
usually alone.  There was a "permanently" installed
hoop & backboard where those tables are.

The shed to the right is a
newer addition to the backyard

Michigan Bike Ride - October 19, 2020

Hagen on his lakefront windsurfing spot
Great to see a college fraternity brother today.  He showed me his bicycle haunts and a great trail along Lakes Charlevoix & Michigan.  I should have gotten pics of the fresh, clean, perfectly clear lake waters.  My Chesapeake Bay friends wouldn't believe it!

And Michigan is added to the RV Map!

Michigan, Winterizing - October 19, 2020

My calendar showed more days than needed to head west to Indiana from Pennsylvania, so I decided now was the time to add Michigan to the RV map.

Sunset in Ohio

As the forecast showed below freezing temperatures in northern Michigan, I winterized during my stop enroute through northwestern Ohio.  Although the coldest temperature recorded by my thermometer was only 31 degrees (28F was forecast) it was cold enough that I felt justified in winterizing the RV.  Especially as I'll be in the northern climes for at least a few more weeks.

The creek behind my site

It turns out that winterizing the RV is much simpler than winterizing the boat (Kelly IV).  Winterizing the RV is required as all the tanks and hoses are below the heated coach and exposed to the outside temperatures.  All that is necessary is to cut the hot water heater out of the fresh water system and drain all the fresh water and both holding tanks.  This is easily done through valves in the system for just that duty.  Loading the fresh water hoses with potable anti-freeze prevents the hoses from bursting with any frozen water that might be left in low spots in the system.

Using the winterized RV is a bit more bother, but certainly do-able.  I have lots of bottled water, which doesn't freeze as I keep it inside the heated coach.  After using water for cooking & dishes, I rinse the sink and drain hose with potable anti-freeze to prevent the holding tank from freezing.

A long drive with many rough miles along US 23

For bathing I use a waterless shampoo that claims to be used aboard the space station and wipe clean with baby wipes.  For the head, I flush with the potable anti-freeze so the black water tank doesn't freeze.

             Snow overnight in Michigan

Just east of Petosky, MI in East Park, I enjoyed a quiet lunch in the RV overlooking Little Traverse Bay on a grey, wet day.

Mazeroski Day - October 13, 2020

The section of the Forbes Field Wall, still standing

Mazeroski Day in Pittsburgh is October 13.  On October 13, 1960, Bill Mazeroski of the Pittsburgh Pirates, hit a walk off home run to secure the World Series for the Pirates in the bottom of the 9th inning of the seventh game against the NY Yankees.

Listen carefully and you'll hear the
radio broadcast of the home run

Annually, Pirates fans meet at the section of the Forbes Field wall that still stands across the street from Posvar Hall at the University of Pittsburgh.  At the annual gathering, there are folks who bring a recording of the radio broadcast of the original game and play the entire game starting the recording exactly when the game was first broadcast, ensuring that the recording of the big home run occurs at exactly the time it did on October 13, 1960.
Forbes Field Home Plate in Posvar Hall

Forbes Field was so important to Pittsburghers that when they built the new hall on the grounds of the former baseball field, they mounted the actual home plate in the same spot it occupied at Forbes Field.  Now that spot is in the main hallway of Posvar Hall for all to see, including a part-time MBA student forty years ago, yours truly.

My MBA school is the University of Pittsburgh.
Since the building for the business school wasn't completed until my final term, my classes were in the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh.  The pic is taken from the south, in front of the Frick Art Museum, hence the fancy fountain

Moraine State Park Bicycle Ride

A beautiful day to ride in the park.  Breezy and comfortable
as the leaves are beginning to achieve their autumn colors.
