Europe with College Buddy, September 1980

Kim, a fellow Delt and college buddy from Evansville, Indiana, joined me in September 1980 for a train trip across Europe.

Kim flew to Pittsburgh so I took him for a brief tour of my employer, New Castle Industries, in New Caste, PA.

Then we flew to New York to play tourist for a day while waiting for our red eye flight to Gatwick Airport, London.

We briefly saw a movie being filmed which included some actors dressed as nuns catching a ride on a garbage truck!

Our European trip began with a visit to England to catch up with a British friend that I met at Scout camp a couple years earlier.

Longest Bicycle Ride

The summer of 1974 Murph decided to ride his bicycle, a G. Lapierre, back to college across the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana.  His confidence came from having completed his second Wilkes-Barre 100, a 100 miles loop from downtown Wilkes-Barre, PA out to the small towns and mountaintops outside of town and returning downtown.  Due to the multiple elevation changes it was called "The Toughest 100 in the East."

The higlighted roads are the route taken
from Bloomsburg, PA to Crawfordsville, IN

The local paper in Bloomsburg documented the successful completion

Murph's girlfriend at the time built this plaque
including postcards Murph wrote from 4 of his stops

The ride even made the front page
of my fraternity newsletter!
The rest of the story.
