What has become a tradition is the annual September Weekend Cruise hosted by Captain Sean Stull aboard his Beneteau 34, SouthPaw, out of Annapolis. Sean's crew always includes Commodore Bill Paviol, Jeweler/Watchmaker Warren (Guy/Magyver) Stewart and yours truly, CaptMurph. And this year, additional & honored crew, Cam Stull, Captain's son, joined the boat.
Per Captain Stull:
Cameron Kasey Stull and I picked up Bill Paviol and then Warren Stewart and Allen Murphy Friday night to head to Annapolis for the weekend. Saturday morning we motored into the wind and waves south down the bay. We put out all the canvas as we rounded Bloody Point into Eastern Bay. We had a great sail for a while, then a squall caught up to us with sustained 25 knot winds with gusts to 30. Since we had a boat full of sailors, I decided not to motor up and bring in the sails. Instead, we kept turning into the wind and alternated reefing the main and jib until we got back under control while sailing. Once we got down to a couple handkerchiefs, we were sailing at 6+ knots. South Paw handled the fiesty wind fine. We sailed up the Wye River and anchored in Shaw Bay right as the annual Eastport Oyster Boys concert was starting at 1500. Bill, Cam, and I took the dinghy over to the boat stage for the rest of the concert. As soon as it ended, we weighed anchor and headed for Tilghman Creek to drop the hook for the night. There was a complete rainbow behind us, with a lesser second rainbow above. It was a little tight getting in, but a great little anchorage with a colorful sunset. We had surf 'n turf for dinner, then turned in for the night. We still had five hours on the water to get back and I had to be a volleyball at 1530, so we woke up at 0400 and pulled the anchor at 0430. The wind was blowing 15 knots early, so we night motor-sailed out of Eastern Bay until dawn and motored the rest of the way back. We covered nearly 50 NM in this short, but action-packed weekend.
