Germain's Visit and Sail - June 30, 2016

Nancy and Andy Germain, long-time cruising sailors and experienced cross-country RVers, joined Karen and I for a wonderful daysail across the Bay and back.  These are wonderful friend's of Karen's that hosted a party for several mutual friends when we sailed through their current homeport of Palm Coast during our 2015 Northbound Cruise.

Star Spangled Baltimore Cruise - June 21-28, 2016

Patapsco River, Stoney Creek,Francis Scott Key Buoy, Inner Harbor, RockCreek, Magothy River, Dividing Creek, Spa Creek

June 21, 2016 - Annapolis, MD  A nice sunset after some ugly weather the past few hours.  We're planning an early start for our cruise in the morning.

June 22, 2016 - We just saw many fish splashing in the creek, but didn't understand what was happening. Any ideas, you biologists and fisherman out there?

June 24, 2016 - We departed Spa Creek Marina at 0832 hours.  Our timing was off as we had to drop anchor for 20 minutes waiting for the 0900 bridge opening.

Kelly IV at the Bay Bridge
A calm day meant we'd be motoring under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

Annapolis Bay Bridge

Kelly IV motorsails under the Annapolis Bay Bridge headed to the Patapsco River for the weekend.  The grey day provided some sunshine but no sunset worth picturing.

June 25, 2016 - Kelly IV  set off for first for the Francis Scott Key Bridge and we circled the special stars and stripes buoy memorializing the exact location where Key was standing aboard the British ship when he wrote the "Star-Spangled Banner".

Friends recommended Captain James Crabhouse, so that's where we tied up.  Of course, the menu included a dozen steamed crabs!

Low and behold, our entertainment for our midday meal was the infamous Baltimore Garbage Scow!  It is a great invention for scooping the floating trash out of the water as it pokes its way into the hidden corners of the harbor collecting masses of plastic, paper, cardboard, foam, film, bottles, and even boards and sticks.  Nothing seems to escape The Scow.

A short walking tour seemed a great way to walk off our sizable lunch so we left Kelly IV tied up at the pier and wandered and wondered at downtown Baltimore's sights.  It wasn't long before we hopped aboard, loosed the lines and were cruising back down the Patapsco River.

Our anchorage that evening was in Rock Creek, Pasadena, MD.

June 26, 2016 - As we departed Rock Creek early this morning we sailed by the White Rocks that guard the mouth of Rock Creek.  As you might guess, we can thank the birds for making the rocks so very white.

It was short motorsail from the Patapsco River into the Magothy River as we sailed the western Chesapeake Bay out of the Patapsco.

Kelly IV provided us with a great anchorage in Mill Creek near Ferry Point Marina where Karen and I enjoyed a nice meal.

We actually got some sailing in as the breeze was very nice for a close hauled beat across the Bay just north of the Bay Bridge.  That explains why our track takes us almost to Kent Island before we finally tacked to sail under the bridge.  As Murphy's Law would dictate, that was the end of our sailing as we had the breeze on our bow and had to motor back to Annapolis.

June 28, 2016 - This is the first stand up paddle board we've seen with a forward steering station!  :-)

Wye River, Cambridge, Galesville, Annapolis - June 12-18, 2016

June 12, 2016 - Spa Creek Marina. Sunrise this morning as we prepare to sail to the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay.
Spa Creek sunrise
We timed things well enough to keep our wait for the bridge opening to just a few minutes.  Unlike the day we had to wait over an hour because we forgot about the weekday morning rush when the bridge stays closed.

Wye River anchorage
Our beautiful, quiet, snug anchorage for a couple nights after a perfect sail today from Annapolis to the Eastern shore. Enjoying solitude, fast skates, wading birds, bright sunshine & comfortable breeze. Only drawback . . . no hockey game.

June 13, 2016 - Karen and I spent a quiet day reading, working on small boat projects and enjoying the calm and serenity of our solo anchorage.  A few small boats swooped past to see Kelly IV, but none stopped to talk or intrude.

June 14, 2016 - Great sailing this morning out of Eastern Bay, including a mini adventure traversing the thin waters of Poplar Island Narrows, just east of Poplar Island. Another beautiful day on the Chesapeake Bay with Karen.

This evening we tied up at the free seawall in Cambridge, MD at the Dorchester County Building.
Cambridge, MD

June 15, 2016 - The original plan was to stay in Cambridge for two nights, but the weather forecast looked a bit iffy for getting across the open Chesapeake on the 16th, so we departed this morning for the West River.  After a damp motorsail from Cambridge, we're tied up in Galesville.

We arrived in time to observe the the Wednesday night racers head out for a challenging sail in the gusty breeze. We'll probably be here for two or three days as we let the wet weather blow thru.

June 16, 2016 - Great News!  We'll have company for our sail back to Annapolis.  Keith and Stephanie are driving to the Chesapeake Bay this weekend and will join us early on the 18th for the sail from Galesville to Annapolis.

June 18, 2016 - Our waterview sunrise this morning was spectacular, but you judge for yourself at the photo. Later today we sailed back to Annapolis with great friends, Stephanie & Keith Otto.  While the sun and water were glorious, the wind was non-existent, so it was a motor trip the entire way.
