Shows, Displays and More, July 21-29, 2019

The show began as REZA and his motorcycle appeared from nowhere
Our next show was a magician, REZA.  It was a terrific stage performance as he made motorcycles and helicopters appear out of nothing as well as bewildering illusions and unbelievable tricks.
The marvelous finale was the grand appearance of
the helicopter with a beautiful assistant inside!

With a day off from stage shows, we decided on two very different performances.  First was the Bass Pro Shop Headquarters in Springfield, MO.  As most of you know the wonderful displays presenting fishing and outdoor living in each Bass Pro Shop location, just imagine what HQ is like!  Yep, outta this world!  I was amazed at the many aquariums for such a variety of fish, alligators, gars, turtles, etc.  I was particularly enthralled with how the fishing and aquarium displays had me thinking I was living under water, looking up at the undersides of the fishing boats!  And the stuffed game animals were so well done and life-like.

This sculpture (in metal) is also at "Top of the Rock"
Although there were many different bucks, this one is a sculpture in bronze, much larger than life
The second performance was our second opportunity for "Throwed Rolls!"  They have a location just south of Springfield, so we got a kick out of the staff throwing rolls and the huge portions, which fed us for a couple days after!

Karen enroute to Pond Island
We paddled our kayaks for a few hours on Tuesday, the 23rd.  The boat ramp was a mile or so from the campsite, so we trailered the kayaks behind the RV and launched them from the ramp.  We saw a small island named "Pond Island" on the chart, so that became our destination.  On arrival, we discovered numerous plastic flowers and small stone cairns plus a cross and wreath stuck in the pebbled beach.  It is our guess that these were memorials remembering the souls lost when the duck boat capsized in Table Rock Lake in 2018.

Theater hosting "Samson"
Our show this evening was Samson.  This is the familiar Bible story where Samson has superhuman strength, but loses it when his hair is cut.  The production is huge in every way with an enormous stage that wraps around both sides of the audience, massive sets, live animals, actors and animals performing in the spectator aisles, superb singing and even full size temples crashing down!  Big in every way, it just seemed too much.  It was a grand spectacle and worth the experience, just not our favorite show.

For a change of pace, we played tourist in Downtown Branson, the older part of town.  It was fun as we explored Dick's 5 and 10 (More stuff in more aisles, lots of planes, trains and auto models, games, etc, etc.) and were awed by the "Fire and Light" display of fountains, fire and light show on the Branson Landing and boardwalk along Lake Taneycomo.  The "Fire & Light" show was so impressive that we attended several shows, as they use different music and choreography each hour.

Blues Brothers
Our last three shows were "Legends in Concert," 'The Presley's," and "Dolly Parton's Stampede."  All were fun and felt worthwhile with "Legends" bringing back fun music memories with songs by Johnny Cash, the Blues Brothers and Elvis (among others).
Dolly's Stampede
"Dolly's Stampede" was an impressive presentation of how the west was won with horses, wagons and even an Indian maiden flying like an eagle.

But our favorite and what we modestly claim is best-fitting for Branson, was "The Presley's."  It is three generations of family entertainment with slapstick humor, good fiddlin', guitar pickin' and excellent singing.  Although neither Karen or I am fans of Country Music (we recognized very few of the songs!) the presentation was fun, entertaining and well worth the time and dollars spent.

Old Truck, Barn and a Great History, July 17-20, 2019

We saw many terrific shows beginning with "The Dutton's," a family of three generations performing many instruments and singing, but they are especially skilled with their fiddles.  Check their performance on AGT, especially at the 1:30 mark.
Our first show in Branson:  "The Dutton's"
You'll notice they are playing the fiddle Next to them, Not their own!
One element of inspiration for our trip came from good friends, Gail and Roger of western PA, TGO and Appalachian Trail fame (They successfully thru-hiked the AT in 2017).
Gail with her Dad's truck
Gail's father owned, drove and personally maintained a 1953 pickup truck until he stopped driving it in the late 1990's.  Gail and her siblings all learned to drive in her dad's truck.  Once he stopped driving, the truck was stored in an old barn near Gail's family home in Latrobe, PA.  As events unfolded, Johnny Morris, founder and CEO of Bass Pro Shops, decided the barn was perfect for the restaurant he was building at his golf resort, "Top of the Rock," at Table Rock Lake, Missouri.  When negotiating the purchase, Johnny was reported to say that if he didn't get the truck with the barn, he wouldn't buy the barn!
Johnny's version of the story
Well, Johnny got both the barn and the truck and they are today enjoyed by the thousands of folks who visit "Top of the Rock" every year, including Karen and me!

Buffalo sculpture
Since we were already at the resort, we decided to enjoy a dinner at the "Buffalo Bar," named for the impressive sculpture overlooking Table Rock Lake.  Since we dined at sunset, we were delighted by the piping ceremony.

Avoiding Tropical Storm Barry, July 13-16, 2019

It rained every day as we made our way from Gulf Shores, Alabama through Mississippi, Arkansas and finally Branson, Missouri.  It turns out we were pacing right along with Barry, the tropical storm.
We were traveling in Barry's wettest quadrant, getting torrents of rain
Enroute to Branson we finally escaped the rain and
found the perfect coffee stop in Marshall, AR

Alabama and Missouri, July 6 - August 3, 2019

Karen and I decided to visit places recommended highly by RV friends of ours and we were not disappointed.  To review the entire trip, scroll to the bottom and click for a "Newer Post".   Our plan was to first camp in Alabama to enjoy the Gulf coast, then north through Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri to camp at Table Rock State Park, just outside Branson, Missouri.

Alabama, July 6-12, 2019

The trip began with my brand new tires going flat!  I had bought the tires a couple days before we planned to leave with the idea that we'd avoid any tire problems on the long road trip.  Then I noticed that the RV seemed to be riding a bit lower each day.  It bothered me enough to take it to the folks who sold me the tires to have them checked.  Thankfully, it was only a leaky valve which was quickly replaced and we were on our way, only a couple hours late.

We first drove the RV to Crawfordville, Florida, over 300 miles towards our destination.  My college classmates will recognize the only difference between C'ville, FL and C'ville, IN is a single "s," as the home of Wabash College is Crawfordsville, IN.

Our next day had us enjoying a brief walk in Niceville, FL taking a break from the drive, before continuing to Gulf State Park, AL.

The pictures and captions tell most of the tale.
