Day 64 Rt 66 Barstow, CA

Before dinner last night I shared socially distanced beer with
new friends at Post 751 of the
American Legion, Newberry Springs, CA.
Day 64 following old RT 66 and rolled downhill out of the high desert into the "Valley".  Great fun today in Barstow, Oro Grande & Victorville, CA.  I wish I could share pics of the dramatic change from brown to green, but I was busy driving.  🙂🚐

My new friends at Post 751 of the American Legion,
Newberry Springs, CA told me about this cool spot,
but didn't mention that The Barn also provides a food exchange.

Stone Hotel, Daggett, CA

Daggett, CA

This house with it's curved eaves & pointed ridge
caught my eye in Daggett, CA. It is
near the Desert Market and Stone Hotel,
famous landmarks on Rt 66.

At the Barstow train station and Harvey House.

The Barstow train station and Harvey House is
a grand old building, still used by Amtrak.
Also with a train museum & Rt 66 Museum, both closed for Covid.

This pub also sported an excellent
wall mural honoring veterans and
the local military bases (See next pic),
but my siblings will recall how
our Dad loved the Abbott & Costello sketch
that inspired this pub name.

Barstow, CA

Many of Barstow's murals are truly grand.

Serendipitously found this modern 'Vette parked by
one of many Barstow signs highlighting Rt 66.
And, yes, that's a classic 'Vette on the sign!

the history of mining and geology near Barstow.

Vintage neon over this Barstow cafe.

Barstow has so many wonderful murals on
several themes including Rt 66 and other historical roadways,
Native American history, natural history and,
of course, Barstow's history.

This classic motel in Barstow has a highly inclusive set of signs.

The gas station is long gone, but
folks still maintain the old sign.

Elmer's famous bottle ranch was closed, Covid,
but still more bottles than could be counted or
photographed. North of Bryman, CA.

I found the circular facade to this
abandoned club intriguing. Oro Grande, CA

This unused station in Oro Grande, in 6 feet tall letters
on the fence (center), shouts, "Open 24 Hours"!

I love all the murals along Rt 66 and today
got to watch one being painted!

And met the Artist!

Very cool bench outside the

While I understand this is a great museum in Victorville, it's currently closed due to the pandemic.
